About: José María Mijares Fernández, a master of Cuban art, began his studies in 1936 at Havana's San Alejandro National School of Fine Art, Cuba’s oldest and most prestigious art school. Under the guidance of renowned professors, including the influential artist Ponce, Mijares developed a distinctive style that fused geometric abstraction with a deeply Cuban sensibility. Although he left Cuba, he often said that "Cuba never left him," with images of his homeland frequently appearing in his work. Known for his neo-baroque compositions, Mijares holds a celebrated place in Cuban art, alongside masters like Carlos Enríquez, René Portocarrero, and Cundo Bermúdez.
