About: Rolph Scarlett (b. June 13, 1889, Guelph, Canada) started in jewelry and theater set design before shifting to abstract art after meeting Paul Klee in 1923. Settling in New York in 1937, Scarlett received a Guggenheim Foundation scholarship through curator Hilla Rebay, who encouraged his work at the Museum of Non-Objective Painting (now the Guggenheim). There, he refined his nonobjective style, emphasizing geometric forms and primary colors, and lectured on art from 1940 to 1946.
Scarlett exhibited widely, including solo shows at Jacques Seligmann Gallery (1949) and the Washburn Gallery (1982), with his works displayed at the Met, Whitney, and Carnegie museums. He continued creating until his death on August 7, 1984, near Woodstock, NY.
